The city of Columbus, Georgia is located at the fall line of the Chattahoochee River, where the river drops 125 feet. The river was first dammed in 1828 and today the powerhouses sit on top of the remaining dam structure. The powerhouses were constructed in 1899 and 1900 as the mills were converted from direct waterpower to electric power. Similar to the surrounding industrial sites, the powerhouses were recently renovated. All the power generating equipment has been removed, but the deep sense of history remains.
